Architectural Designer Selection
Catawba County Schools Middle School Additions and Renovations
The school system intends to select a Design Consultant for middle school additions and renovations in Catawba County Schools, Newton, North Carolina. The project includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- The HM Arndt Middle School project will add approximately 35,000 square feet of heated space, consisting of the construction of a new cafeteria seating area and kitchen, a 14-classroom addition, and renovations to the existing 102,000-square-foot building, and associated site work.
- The Maiden Middle School project will add approximately 37,000 square feet of heated space, consisting of the construction of a new cafeteria seating area and kitchen, a 14-classroom addition, and new connecting corridors, which will create a single campus building. Also included in the project scope are renovations to approximately 80,000 square feet in the existing school buildings and associated site work.
- The Mill Creek Middle School project will add a 2,000-square-foot cafeteria seating addition, along with a 26,500-square-foot building, which will consist of 14 classrooms. Renovations to the existing 105,000-square-foot campus will also be a part of the project, as well as associated site work and potential wastewater treatment plant upgrades.
- The Jacobs Fork Middle School project will add a 2,000-square-foot cafeteria seating addition along with a 19,000-square-foot building, which will consist of 12 classrooms. Renovations to the existing 105,000-square-foot building will also be a part of the project, as well as associated site work and potential wastewater treatment plant upgrades.
- The Riverbend Middle School project will add a 2,000-square-foot cafeteria seating addition along with a 19,000-square-foot building, which will consist of 12 classrooms. Renovations to the existing 105,000-square-foot building will also be a part of the project, as well as associated site work.

The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is designed to comply with all applicable rules and regulations of new school facilities as described by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction School Planning Section, as well as any applicable federal, state, and local requirement(s) associated with the construction of new school facilities or renovation of existing school facilities. Design firms wishing to be considered for this project are requested to submit a “Statement of Qualifications” per the instructions on the Catawba County Schools website.
In order to expedite the design and construction process, the school system will consider the use of a prototype design for Mill Creek, Jacobs Fork, and Riverbend, as these three middle schools have the same basic design features. The total project is currently estimated to cost +/- $120 million dollars.
The following criteria will be used to select firms for the projects:
- Expertise and past performance in K-12 projects (25%)
- Staffing and proposed design team for the project (25%)
- Sustainability in school design (25%)
- Proximity to, and familiarity with, the area where the project will be located (15%)
- Miscellaneous (10%)
Qualifications will be received until 4:00 PM on Friday, February 6th, 2026, in the Assistant Superintendent’s Office located at 2285 North Anderson Avenue, Newton, NC 28658. The responses to this RFQ should be delivered to the attention of Assistant Superintendent Dan K. Moore. Please provide four (4) paper copies of your response to the RFQ.
