Degrees and Certifications:
BS in Elementary Education K-6 from Appalachian State University Master of Arts in Special Education from Lenoir-Rhyne University National Boards Certification in Literacy: K-6
Welcome to 5th grade! I have been teaching for 30 years and 24 of those years were at Startown Elementary School. My last position at Startown was leading the school as the Reading Specialist and Science Olympiad coach. I also taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th grade. I decided that I wanted to follow my dream to be back in the classroom. I am excited to join the Blackburn 5th grade team.
Education: I received my BS in K-6 education from Appalachian State University. A few years later, I received a Masters degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University. Later in my career, I achieved National Board Certification in Literacy and also received state certification in Gifted Education.
My family: I have two sons that are currently in college. Jacob is my oldest and he is at UNC Chapel Hill working on his PhD in Chemistry. He will be working with our 5th and 6th graders to bring some STEM activities virtually from the UNC chemistry lab. My youngest son is a sophomore at East Carolina University. He is majoring in Communications and hoping to work in the sports industry. My husband builds and designs prototypes for the furniture industry.
Hobbies: I love to travel with my family. This year we went to Yellowstone National Park and stayed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Reading is one of my favorite activities to do. I also love scrapbooking.
Background: I grew up in Gastonia. I met my husband, Jamie, at Appalachian State University and we were married the week after I graduated college. We moved to Hickory and have lived here for 30 years.
