June-August, 2019:

If you are an upcoming 7th grader, please know that you won't need your instrument on the first day of school.  We'll use the first week of school to learn the basics of music, and then we'll start on instruments. See below for more information! Please note- you did NOT have to come to early band sign up night to be in band or be present when I spoke to the elementary schools. That was just to help you decide what instrument you liked. If you want to be in band, all you need to do is a)sign up for band on your registration form  or   b)send a parent note to the school within the first week of school saying you are requesting a schedule change to band. I want any and all interested band students to be in band!

If you are an upcoming 8th grader, please go ahead and make sure you have the Blue Tradition of Excellence Book, a Flip Folder and Lyre (available at Music and Arts in Hickory-just tell them what you play) and your instrument in working condition. Reed players- be sure that you have a whole box (10) of size 3 reeds. We'll start school learning lots of new music! See below for more information.

Here is some detailed information for the upcoming school year.

Rising 7th graders: Welcome to Middle School! I'm glad you'll be in band and can't wait to get started. I hope you got the letter sent home in your elementary school report card. If not, drop by RBMS and we have extra letters in the front office. Remember that you will need to get your own instrument over the summer and the instrument you signed up to play at early band registration night will be the instrument you will play in the band. All clarinet and saxophone players will need one box of size 2 reeds to start the school year. All brass players (trumpet, trombone, baritone, and tuba) will need at least a bottle of valve oil and a tube of slide grease. All 7th graders will need to purchase their own copy of Tradition of Excellence Book 1 for the instrument they will play. You can find this book online or at Music and Arts (shares a parking lot in Hickory with PetSmart and is beside Home Depot). Percussion will need to purchase a stick bag, including yarn, plastic, rubber, and drum sticks (available as a set at Music and Arts). You will not need your instrument at school until Sept. 3rd. If you are unsure of what instrument you want to play, but signed up for band please wait and we'll find an instrument you can be successful on during the first week of school. I'm excited to meet you!
All 7th graders will give a required concert in December on Tuesday, December 10 at 6:00 pm at P.E. Monroe Auditorium on Lenoir-Rhyne’s campus and on Tuesday May 12th 2020 at 6:00 pm.

Rising 8th graders:Please remember that you will be playing the same instrument as last year and we will start the school year by reviewing, and then start in Tradition of Excellence Book 2 (make sure you get your own copy this summer if you haven't already) and learning Pep Tunes, All County Scales, and Solos.

Concert 2019 Information:

The 7th grade and the 8th grade winter band concert will be on Tuesday, December 10th 2019 at Lenoir Rhyne University's P.E. Monroe Auditorium. It will begin at 6:00 pm. Parents will need to plan to bring students (students: remember to bring your instrument home that day and bring it to the concert!) to the auditorium anywhere between 5:15 and 5:40 pm. Attendance by band students is required and this concert will be a major part of their grade. Band students should wear nice white shirt and black bottoms (pants or skirt) with black shoes. Gentlemen will receive a tie to borrow from the school for the evening and so they will need a white button up dress shirt. Admission to the concert is free, and the Bunker Hill Band will perform immediately after River Bend. We look forward to seeing you there! For those that like to plan ahead, our Spring Concert will be on Tuesday, May 12th with all details as above.
The winter Jazz Band concert will be on Thursday December 5th in the RBMS cafeteria at 7:00 pm. Jazz Band students should be brought back to school that evening between 6:15 and 6:30, dressed in black bottoms (skirt, pants) and a nice white top. Jazz Band students are required to perform at the concert, but all band students, friends, and family are invited to attend to hear this jazzy concert! Admission is free. This will be a joint concert with Bunker Hill High School's Jazz Band (high school band will perform at an estimated 7:30). Both bands will perform one tune at the end of the concert together as one big group- it's going to be awesome! Our Spring Jazz Band concert will have all the same details as above, but will happen on Monday, May 4th.
