Candace Hartsog Stephens

I have been teaching students with intellectual and multiple disabilities for 19 years.  I am fortunate to have experience with learners ranging in age from three to 85 in both public schools and intermediate care facilities for individuals with developmental disabilities.  I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and a Master of Arts in Curriculum Specialist.

I teach the Extended Content Standards and Daily Living/Functional Skills across the school day.   I am also a member of Maiden's Mentor Team and enjoy collaborating with teachers as a workshop presenter when time allows.  I am very interested in educational research pertaining to literacy for students with significant disabilties and the use of assistive technology in the classroom.  I currently represent adapted curriculum teachers and content on the Catawba County Schools AAC/AT Team.

My husband, Matthew, and I have three boys and one little girl.  We enjoy spending time in the mountains and on the beach.  We have a spunky Miniature Schnauzer, FiFi, a wild Golden Retriever puppy named Zelt, and Max, a bearded dragon.

Our classroom motto is "All Things Are Possible Here".  We are very much a family and enjoy laughing and learning together!  I am fortunate to work with a wonderful group of young adults and staff at Maiden High School!

Our class operates an enterprise, Exceptional Design.  We create and sell craft items with a special focus on meaningful business sense and money management.  If you are interested in our crafts, please click on the Exceptional Design tab to the left of the screen.
