Catawba County art students were recently honored at the 77th Annual Paul Whitener Memorial Student Art Show. Their art is on display through the end of the month at the Hickory Museum of Art.
Since 1947, the Hickory Museum of Art has hosted a student art show, named in honor of its founder, to encourage and recognize student achievements in the visual arts. This year, more than 300 entries from students across all of Catawba County were submitted.
From those entries, 8 works are recognized: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention in 2-dimensional works in the middle school division and the high school division, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention in 3-dimensional works in the middle school division and the high school division. In conjunction with the Whitener Awards, the Keep Catawba County Beautiful committee sponsors monetary awards for artworks made of recycled materials. A Coffee in the Coe Award has been awarded to the “most creative” work of art, as chosen by the Coffee in the Coe group.
“The Paul Whitener Student Art Show is an exciting time at the Hickory Museum of Art, as it showcases the young talent we have in our County. We [are] encouraging young artists to pursue their dreams, and having their art in a museum may be the boost of encouragement they need,” said Karla Starnes, HMA’s education manager.
Since their founding, the Whitener Awards have identified the early promise of some of the county’s most exceptional artists. Adjudicators look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or vision. The Paul Whitener Memorial Student Art Show continues to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the mid-central region of North Carolina.
The middle school and high school division 2024 Whitener Awards ceremony was held on March 19th. Catawba County Public Schools is pleased to announce the following winners:
