Face Coverings Remain Required Indoors for all Staff, Students, & Visitors

During this evening's Catawba County Board of Education (BOE) meeting, the board approved a motion to keep the mandated face-covering policy in place until it is reviewed again at the next BOE meeting on October 25th.

Therefore, face masks covering the nose and mouth will continue to be required indoors for all staff, students, and visitors. You can read the Use of Face Coverings policy and exceptions here.

During the work session this morning, Catawba County Public Health director, Jennifer McCracken, presented the latest COVID-19 data in Catawba County. She noted the decrease in the district's quarantine and positive case data after the required face-covering policy was instated on September 2nd. You can see this information on the district's COVID-19 Dashboard that is updated daily.

Since the required mask policy was enacted on September 2nd, the number of staff and student quarantines decreased by 75%. Additionally, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 has decreased 65% from a high of 256 to 89 cases today.
 

Additional Teacher Workdays Added to District Calendar

The BOE also approved a motion to add three additional teacher workdays for K-12 and two early release days for K-6.  These additional workdays will assist elementary teachers in completing 64 hours of state-mandated LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training and allow all teachers to plan for the instruction of both face-to-face quarantined students.
