The first step is to apply to  Applicant Tracker for the Substitute Teacher Position. You should have your resume and three professional references, including at least one supervisor, with email addresses ready to upload.  

Once your application has been processed, you will receive information for your background check and the substitute certification course offered in person once per month at no charge. 

Please note: Retired Catawba County Schools’ teachers should contact the Administrative Assistant directly.

You must:

• Hold a high school diploma and be 2 years removed from high school graduation for K-6 and 4 years removed for all other positions;  OR have completed a bachelor's degree. 
• Have a clear background check.
• Be approved for employment by the Board of Education.

After your background check is approved, you will receive an email from TalentEd with additional orientation paperwork and your name will be submitted to the Board of Education for final employment approval. Contact Kechia Shuford to schedule your orientation once your paperwork is complete.

Current student teachers may substitute in CCS classrooms with a completed application in Applicant Tracker and a letter of permission from your Dean of Education or Field Placement Officer.

Substitute teachers may work up to 16 days or 120 hours per calendar month.

Catawba County Schools utilizes the call system Frontline Education Absence Management (formerly AESOP).  You may sign up to receive phone calls or may simply check their website for available positions.
