Mr. Powers

Hello! My name is Mr. Powers and this is my third year with Catawba County Schools and I am the K-6 visual arts teacher for both Sherrills Ford and Catawba Elementary Schools. Last year I saw so much inspiring art talent and I'm very excited to see creative potentials blossom this year!

I am originally from the Adirondack Mountain region of upstate New York. This is my 17th year teaching visual arts. I taught for 11 years at American Renaissance School in Statesville, NC and 3 years at the Metro School in Charlotte, NC. There I created an adaptive arts curriculum for students with special needs from kindergarten through high school.

My teaching philosophy is that all children should be given the opportunity to express themselves as individuals. I believe that the main focus of art education should be on the process of creating art, whereby students are actively discovering and exploring ideas, as opposed to a single focus on the final product. My goal as an art instructor is to encourage self-growth through art-making experiences that will challenge students to think in new and exciting ways. Students gain self-confidence in their abilities and learn how to better express themselves as individuals within a positive, supportive, and non-competitive environment.

An important part of our arts curriculum is connecting with the local community. In the Fall, I select artwork to be displayed in the county office building in Newton, NC. In the Spring, artwork is chosen to be included in a show at the Hickory Museum of Art. This is a great opportunity for students to showcase their best work and see the wonderful contributions from other area schools. It is also a juried show and artwork is chosen for special recognition. We also display artwork in the spring at a show located in the Valley Hills Mall in Hickory, NC. We always receive many compliments and each year I am proud to show off the amazing creativity of our students.

In addition to my years teaching art in the classroom, I have also taught private art lessons, studied graphic design at CPCC, developed a cartooning class, and become a certified art framer. I teach private guitar lessons and train in a variety of martial arts. I live in Denver, NC with my son and our black cat named Hiro.

Feel free to contact me with any comments, questions, or suggestions for our arts curriculum. Also, if you have any special talents in the arts that you might like to share with our students. We are also always in need of any extra art materials that you may like to donate to our arts program such as: crayons, markers, black sharpies, magazines with age-appropriate color photos, drawing paper, construction paper, textured paper, non-toxic washable glue, pencils, erasers, and hand-held pencil sharpeners. Thanks for supporting our emerging artists!
