Ms. Laura K. Wachsmuth

After graduating from Newton-Conover High School, I graduated from Wake Forest University in May 1990 with a BS in psychology and sociology. I began my work at UNC-G the following fall. My first concentration was a MS in Child Development and Family Relations. This led to pursuing a MS in Counseling and Educational Development with a concentration in community agency counseling. I completed my PhD minus one course and the dissertation. However, with an unplanned move and second pregnancy, I felt the calling to be a mom first as kids grow so fast.

I moved from Guilford County back to Catawba County in December 1997. I have 4 children: Jenna (22), Jared (20) and Jaden (18),  and Jonah (15). My second full-time job is being mom, taxi driver/chauffeur, cook, and schedule manager. In my “free” time, I enjoy going to BHHS soccer games, theater plays, dance recitals, and reading.

I joined Catawba County Schools as a sub in December 2004 for the counselor at Maiden Elementary. I was offered the fulltime position starting in 2005. The transfer to Lyle Creek was made in August 2012. It is truly enjoyable to work with elementary students and help to aid their developmental progress.

As an ending note, I always share with the students that my physical handicap (gait limp from cerebral palsy) does provide challenges at times. However, it is up to me on how I respond to these challenges. I can get down or learn and grow from them. No day is perfect but if today is difficult, tomorrow has the chance to be better!
