    Required Materials:

    • Binder/Notebook for organization

    • Pens/Pencils

    • Paper

    • Current Novel Study

    • Assignments Due that day

    Grading:

    80% - Classwork (including homework, classwork, tests, quizzes, projects, presentations, essays/writing, etc) These assignments will be weighted.

    20% - NCFE (This is required by the state and will be taken at the end of the semester.)


    All work is expected on time. Late work will be penalized by a loss of points.


    If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to find out what was missed and make up assignments in a timely manner.

     

    Expectations:

    • Respect yourself, your peers, your school and me
    • Be on time to class, prepared with all required materials
    • Adhere to the school expectations and dress code
    • You are responsible for your performance, attitude, and grade. Do your very best!

     

    Classroom Policies:

    • Have permission before speaking.
    • Listen to others and respectfully participate in class discussions.
    • Assignments on paper will be turned into the appropriate bin located in the classroom. Don’t forget your name on your paper!
    • Go to the restroom during class change. In an emergency, ask permission and leave your cell phone in the room.
    • Supplies will be provided for various activities. Use them, but don’t abuse them. Pick up after yourself.
    • No food or drinks, except water, are allowed in the room.
    • Stay on task and use your time wisely.
    • Come to class prepared to learn (pencils sharpened, pen, paper, novels, and notebooks)
    • Respect all property: School property, personal property, and other's property

     

    Course Content:

    This course is a genre study so it will cover a little bit of every type of literature. Below you can find a list of works that we will possibly study in class, either in whole or in part.

    • The Secret Life of Bees, Susan Monk Kidd
    • Romeo & Juliet, William Shakespeare
    • A Separate Peace, John Knowles
    • Tears of a Tiger, Sharon Draper
    • Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson
    • The Odyssey, Homer

    Word Vocab Power Study:

    We will study word parts (stems) each week. Students are expected to learn these as they may appear on assessments. In class practice will be provided.

     

    Video Information:

    Significant excerpts from the following videos may be shown throughout the semester because these videos relate to the literature we will study. The idea is for the video clips to enhance the understanding of the literature and common themes. Parents and students should review the list and contact me immediately with any questions or concerns. If either parent or student wishes for the student not to view the video, then an alternative, non-punitive assignment will be given to the student.

    Welcome Letter:

    Hello Parents/Guardians!

     

    My name is Amanda Sigmon and I will be your student’s English I teacher this semester. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and give you an idea of what to expect this semester. I am a fourth year teacher, having taught grades 9-12. I am originally from the NC mountains but recently moved to the area this summer. I am very excited about this opportunity to work at Maiden High School with your student.

     

    This semester we will study various books, plays, short stories, poems,  and work of nonfiction. You can find a list of the major works above in the syllabus. The class will be a combination of direct instruction, collaborative group work, independent practice, and formative/summative assessment. My goal is to teach your student both about the literature we study and the skills s/he will need to in order to be successful on the NCFE. The NCFE is the required, state test at the end of the semester.

     

    I am so looking forward to getting to know your student over the next few months. I hope to challenge, encourage, and grow your student academically this semester through the study of American Literature so that s/he can be successful in future English classes. I am always available to answer questions and address concerns; if needed, please free to contact me using the information at the beginning of the syllabus.
