Happy Summer Pirate Nation!
The 2018-2019 school year was a remarkable one for River Bend and I would like to thank each of you for your part in our success. Nothing great ever comes from individual effort; collaboration is ALWAYS behind extraordinary results. Our students, parents, teachers, and community should all celebrate in the achievements of our school this year.
Early test results are in and, for the second year in a row, our students broke school records for academic performance. With an overall proficiency of 64.3%, the highest in River Bend's history, our students demonstrated mastery of middle school content and validated the efforts of our staff to: (1) align instruction with content standards, (2) incorporate writing into every subject, and (3) increase student motivation for academic success by teaching the growth mindset. More than any point in history, our students are prepared for the rigors of high school and I thank you for your part in that achievement.
Equally as important, our students are demonstrating what it means to be good citizens. Through the Anchor Down Project, our students engaged in over 1,000 hours in community service again this school year. Whether it was reading to elementary school students, visiting nursing home residents, serving meals at our local soup kitchen, picking up roadside trash, or partnering with local government and civic organizations at public events, our students made an impact on eastern Catawba County. Additionally, our teachers delivered instruction aligned to our district's character education initiative in club meetings throughout the year. While I am proud of all of River Bend's indicators of success, I am most gratified when I watch our young people develop into productive community members.
Again, I thank each of you for your part in our accomplishments and wish you all a safe and happy Summer of 2019!
