Startown Elementary recently held its first quarter PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) assembly, which recognizes students and classrooms who went "above and beyond" for the first nine weeks. Led by our 6th grade Student Council members, students were recognized for outstanding academic achievement and effort, good character, and for standing up for their peers. Classroom awards include the "golden plunger" for cleanest classroom, the "golden recorder" for best overall class in music, and many other fun awards. Hickory Martial Arts provided an excellent presentation and martial arts demonstration focusing on bullying awareness and even let our own PE teacher, Gabe Ervin, break a board much to the students' delight. The afternoon was capped off when Mr. Goldsmith, our PE student teacher, was made into a human Rice Crispy treat, the reward for our student body raising over $5000.00 through Jump Rope for Heart to support the American Heart Association.
