Snow Creek Teacher Assistants Support
Kids-in-Need Fund

Pictured are: Mrs. Houston, Mrs. Ayers and Ms. Greene giving the check for $700.00 to St. Stephens Elementary Assistant Principal, Mrs. Jordan. Students donated money on Friday, November 18th- to wear pajamas. Students knew that their donations would be sent to St. Stephens to help their Kids-in-Need who needed assistance with field trips or other activities. Thank you to the parents who also supported this event, sponsored by the Snow Creek Teacher Assistants.
The Snow Creek Elementary Robotics team competed in the North Carolina State Robotics Qualifying Tournament Saturday, November 19 at UNC-Asheville, and was one of seven teams to qualify for the state competition.
Pictured are, L-R standing, Olivia I., Ashley S., and Teacher/Coach Deborah McCall. L-R kneeling are Nathan M., Daniel S., Gabriel B., Michael G., Ana R. Reclining is Jacob L.
They placed sixth in overall robotics score, and won a first place trophy in the category of Innovative Research Solution. They competed against 23 other robotics teams from western North Carolina.
"We had to work together to accomplish our goals," said Ashley S., fourth grade team member. "Our coach (Deborah McCall, fifth grade teacher at Snow Creek) was good because she encouraged us to do our best. Even though we had some ups and downs, our hard work paid off."
Teamwork is part of the scoring in the competition. In this competition, the team was given the task of building a house out of newspaper, ten paper clips, and tape. The team also had to build a robot out of Legos and program it to complete an obstacle course, pick things up, and bring them back.
"The hardest part was working together without yelling at each other," said Nathan M., sixth grade team member.
For the Innovative Research portion of the competition, the team researched pork production, did a skit about how the meat goes from farm to table, and showed their solution to help detect possible spoilage in the meat—a heat-sensitive strip of paper that changes colors when the meat gets too warm.
"We were very excited (about the first place win), but it wasn't just for the trophy," said Olivia I., fifth grade team member. "We just did it to learn, and for the fun. We talked to the judges, and they really liked what we had done."
The team began working together before the end of last school year, then continued through the summer and into this school year to learn the ropes and prepare for competition.
