Absences:
1. If a student signs out before 11:05 am and does not return or they sign in tardy after 11:05 am, they will be considered absent for the day. They must be present one half of the instructional day which would be 3 hours and 15 minutes.
2. When your child is absent from school, always send an excuse note on the day they return to school.
3. For an absence to be excused it must fall under one of the reason codes set by the State of North Carolina and we must receive the note within three days of the child’s return to school.
4. If your child is absent, late or leaves early for a doctor or dentist appointment a note from that doctor or dentist office will be required for that absence to be excused. Whether your child is absent, late or leaves early, the excuse note needs to specify when your child can return to school (that day, the next day, etc.).
5. Once your child has accumulated ten excused absences due to illness and all of the excuse notes have been from the parent, a doctor’s note will be required for any other illness related absences for the remainder of the school year. Until we receive a doctor’s note for those absences, they will be marked unexcused.
6. Absentee letters will only be sent home once a student reaches the amount of days listed below. Letters will only be printed once a month. Students with excessive absences will be handled on an individual basis.
3 unexcused absences – A letter will be sent home informing the parents their child has 3 unexcused absences.
6 unexcused absences – A letter will be sent home informing the parents their child has 6 unexcused absences and it will advise them to set-up a conference with the school counselor if they feel it is necessary to resolve this problem.
10 unexcused absences – A letter will be sent home informing the parents their child has 10 unexcused absences and it will let them know the principal, assistant principal or school counselor will be contacting them to discuss their child’s absentee problem.
5 excused absences - A letter will be sent home informing the parents their child has 5 excused absences.
10 excused absences - A letter will be sent home informing the parents their child has 10 excused absences. If all of these absences are due to illness and we have only received excuse notes from the parents, a second letter will be attached letting them know that they will have to bring doctor’s notes for the remainder of the year in order for those absences to be excused.
Tardies:
1. If your child is late for school, you must bring them to the office and sign them in. Please do not drop them off and leave.
2. Students are considered late if they are not in the classroom when the bell rings at 7:52 am.
3. Once a student accumulates three unexcused tardies, they will receive one hour of after school detention. They will receive an additional hour for every three unexcused tardies after that (six, nine, twelve, etc.). The Principal will send home a letter to notify the parents as to when their child will have detention.
It is important to limit the amount of absences your child accumulates because they do go on your child’s permanent school record. If at all possible, your child needs to come to school before and/or after an appointment so they will not be counted absent for the day.
