SSE 2012
All Pro Dad Breakfast
Saint Stephens Elementary School hosted its’ first All Pro Dad breakfast at 6:30AM on Friday, January 20th, for a crowd of over 70 parents and their kids. The All Pro Dad organization was founded by NFL coach Tony Dungy who wanted a way to involve fathers in their child’s education. At the breakfast, parents and children enjoyed free Bo Jangles biscuits while Dads let their child know what they were most proud of, watched an inspirational video clip, connected with other fathers, and had the chance to win prizes from Wal-Mart, Charlotte Bobcats, Texas Roadhouse, Carolina Panthers and more. Mayor Rudy Wright of Hickory stopped by and talked about community support and it’s great to see parents involved with their children.

David Hoots, Exceptional Childrens teacher at SSE, knew that this could have a positive impact on the community and has taken the leadership role in getting this event going. “We had an unbelievable turn out for our first meeting,” Hoots said, “and it means a lot to the children that their fathers are taking time out of their schedules to be with them. The goal is to encourage the parents to support the students and this is just one step in having a positive impact on their relationship and our community as a whole. In order for the students to be successful, they need to know they have the support of their parents, teachers and community.”
David was able to successfully pull together this first All Pro Dad gathering with the support of his Principal, Donna Sigmon and Assistant Principal, Kim Jordan. Other SSE staff providing support included Charles Cornelius, Paula Lyford, Aura Strickland, Marjorie Burkett, Ana Xiong, Jennifer Jones, Olivia Fernández-Domínguez, Kathy Frye, Deborah Joines and Shannon Fuller.
The next All Pro Dad breakfast is scheduled for Friday, February 17th. Students will be receiving reminder notices allowing the parents to reply with the number of people attending. Future All Pro Dad events will be scheduled for the third Friday of each month so be sure to mark you calendars. With more gatherings already scheduled, David Hoots and his support team look forward to seeing more Dads and children coming in and spending this time together.
