Proposed Change in Start/End Times for the Bunker Hill Feeder Area
School Year 2010-2011
Dear BHHS Feeder Area Families,
The principals in the Bunker Hill feeder area have made a proposal to our superintendent, Dr. Markley, concerning the time we begin and end school. Please review the following information and use the link below to provide feedback and/or share concerns.
We propose the following changes:
Claremont Elementary, Oxford Elementary, and Lyle Creek Elementary would like to propose the following times:|
7:55 -2:30 for the instructional day
River Bend would like to propose the following times:
8:15-3:20 for the instructional day
Bunker Hill would like to propose the following times:
8:05-3:10 for the instructional day
We would like to make this recommendation based on several reasons:
- There will be more instructional time devoted to student learning.
- The latest brain research shows that adolescent age students learn better later in the day and younger students learn better earlier in the day.
- Elementary school teacher assistants’ time spent in classrooms would increase.
- The time change will increase the opportunity for middle and high school students to participate in athletics. There will be a shorter amount of time between the end of the day and the start of athletic events.
- This change will place our start and end times in alignment with other feeder areas.
- High school student drivers will not be on the road before dangerous weather notices are issued.
- Adolescent research supports an increased level of attendance, attention, and student success with later start times.
- Elementary schools are planning to use the extra instructional minutes for tutoring and remediation needs for students.
