  View This Week's Word List
We took our mid-year spelling benchmark and some students have moved spelling groups. Be sure to check with your child to make sure you study the right words!

Our spelling, or word study, is based on the Words Their Way program (Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton 2008). I have been fortunate enough to study literacy and spelling from some of the country's leaders in early literacy at Appalachian State University.

We have 4 spelling groups. Students are given a spelling inventory the first week of school to determine their level. Like reading, spelling should match the students ZPD range, or independent level and this may or may not match reading ability. Groups are flexible-there may be only 1 student in a group if needed!

In class we work on words during the Daily 5. Every student completes a word sort on Monday. Other activities include partner sorts, word hunts, games from Words Their way, and concentration.
Currently, I do not assign spelling homework. We work with our words daily in class and students have been successful moving through their stages. If you would like to study at home,
Spelling City is one option. Click below to go straight to our words. Make sure you study the correct list!
