P.R.O.B.E. Research Notebooks

During our Enrichment time each day students have a few choices to extend their learning. A favorite is completing a PROBE on a topic we are studying in Reading, Math, Science, Health, or Social Studies.

So, just what is a PROBE...

Second graders are so naturally curious. PROBEs are an authentic way for students to safely research what they are interested in or learning in class, and share what they have learned with others.

In the beginning of the year we are assigning topics and working on PROBES together. We share info and watch video clips, read nonfiction books and articles, and discuss new info to add to our research side of the notebook. Students illustrate and write on their own.

Later in the year, we will do more with mechanics in our writing, but for now the PROBES serve as a wonderful incentive for building the love of reading nonfiction and writing about what we learn in our own words.

Some students get into PROBES so much, they create their own during free time. Here is one on ocean animals by Camryn and one on horses by Madelynn.
