Reading

Our Literacy Instruction is based on the Daily 5. Each morning from 8-10 am we will rotate through the Daily 5. There are 3 rounds daily, so each students will participate in all 5 activities at least once per week. Allowing for choice encourages students to be responsible for their learning.

Read to Self: Students choosing Read to Self with be independently reading "Just Right" books from their book box which contains 4-8 books. They may sit anywhere in the room. Students must stay in one spot, read the whole time (no "fake reading"), and build stamina.

Read with Someone: Students choosing Read to Someone will read with a partner. They will take turns being the "Coach" to check for understanding or the "Reader". We have a lot of double copy books to choose from! However, partners may or may not be reading the same book.

Listen to Reading: Students choosing to Listen to Reading will quickly collect their chosen "book on tape" and listen to the book. This may be listening to a book online or at our listening center. Listening to fluent reading is critical to building fluency.

Working with Words: Students Working with Words will be completing vocabulary, word wall, or spelling words activities; or chose an activity from the Working with Words tubs. These include SRABBLE tiles, magnetic letters, Wikki Stix, various games, and different magnetic or marker boards.

Working on Writing: Students who are working on their writing will have the choice of completing a PROBE, a journal entry, free writing, letter to a friend, create a postcard, write a poem, or another writing activity available. Every student does Work on Writing in Round 3!

Small Group Instruction: While students rotate through each component of the Daily 5, I pull small strategy groups based on student need. These focused groups are based on student goals on from the CAFE board.
