Here's a great way to get students out of a reading rut! This encourages them to read a variety of genres during independent reading time. Each BINGO card contains 3-4 different genres. They would need to read them in a diagonal, 3 up or 3 down direction.

You will see I ask students for a 1 paragraph summary using "someone, wanted, but, so, then" format. This is a simple way for students to remember to only include what was important to the plot. (There is an alternate format for nonfiction). This is a summarizing strategy I picked up from Kathy Bumgardner.
Ex. Cinderella (someone) wanted to go to the ball, but her wicked stepmother would not allow her to go. So her magical fairy godmother arrived bringing her clothes to wear. Then Cinderella was able to go to the ball. She met the prince and they fell in love; living happily ever after.
The Bingo cards are a great idea I found on Ms. Jenson's website. I added a few things to them. You can find the originals on her site and tailor them to your own class. I changed some fonts as well. These will show up in pdf form only unless you have the same fonts installed on your computer.
