Readers' Theatre in the upper Elementary Classroom~ I have always considered Readers' Theatre in the classroom as parts assigned, practiced, and performed without use of props. This allows the focus for the student to reamin on intonation and fluency (my true goal!) rather than costumes.

This year students will receive scripts on Mondays to practice at school or at home and performances will be held each Friday (or Fluency Fridays). Fluency and all its parts is one area even my highest comprehending students can often improve! What is fluency? Fluency is:

  • recognizing words automatically
  • reading aloud effortlessly and without hestiation
  • reading without having to concentrate on decoding words
  • us able to focus on comprehension

Where Can I Find My Own Scripts?

I use scripts that came with our Scott-Foresman Reading Street basal sereis. There is one script per unit. SInce only 5-6 students will be performing a script a week, I will use those for a while! I also love the poetry theatre on giglepoetry.com. Check it out! They are hilarious!
