Math

We use Math Expressions in Second Grade. This approach is conceptual-it teaches the WHY? as well as the HOW? of mathematics.

Our Math lesson is after lunch. We begin each lesson with Board math. This is a quick daily whole-group discussion in one of the 5 goals in our math curriculum. It serves as a wonderful review. Read more about the research behind it here. And how you to can implement it here.

After Board Math we begin Math Workshop. Workshop consists of 3-4 small groups, one led by the teacher.

Work With Teacher

I teach the daily lesson to each of the three groups individually so that we can provide appropriate support to students who struggle with concepts as well as enrichment for students who are already secure with the skills being taught.

Independent Practice

Students work at their desks on assigned workbook pages after receiving instruction from the teacher. Some groups work on challenge packets if necessary.

Math Games

Students play math games to help them practice concepts learned during instruction.  These games provide students with a fun and interactive way to reinforce new concepts and review skills learned in previous lessons. Two days per week we use First in Math on the laptops.

Sometimes your child may bring home work that does not look anything like the way you and I were taught math! It's okay! This approach is giving them reasoning so they can apply what they are learning about mathematical concepts throughout their life. Click on the unit overviews to learn more about what we are doing in class.

Unit Overviews

Every other unit is a "mini-unit" that is designed to introduce concepts for upper grades. These are the units without bullets in the list above.
