Testing Jargon

See it in action |
This is a web-based program we use to find your child's reading level. Teachers conduct quick, guided one-to-one assessments and receive instant results using a laptop. Students who need additional support can be assessed on an ongoing basis with quick and easy progress monitoring. |
| ORF |
Oral Reading Fluency |
The number of words read in one minute. One of 2 tests used in 2nd grade. They are handed a page page selection and are given one minute. Only words read correctly count towards score. The end of year goal for 2nd grade is 79. |
| TRC |
Text Reading & Comprehension |
This is a one on one reading test given to find reading Comprehension level(understanding what is read). The end of year reading level goal is Level L. |
| Benchmarks |
|
Each fall and spring we get your child's reading level using mClass. This is what we call a benchmark score. |
|
STAR |
|
STAR Reading and Math tests are given on the computer each 9 weeks. Students read passages on the screen and fill in vocabulary and answer questions about seletions. The score output is in grade level eqivalencies. I send home the reports with suggestions after the tests. |

Progress Monitor |
|
Any child who falls below grade level will show as RED or YELLOW in mClass. Red students are retested each week and Yellow students every other week. |

General Acronyms

EC |
Exceptional Children |
When your child is placed with our Exceptional Children's department, they have most likely been identified as having a learning disability. There are other ways to be placed EC, but this is the most common. You can be placed in Reading, Math, or writing. |

AIG |
Academicaally Intellectually Gifted |
Students placed in our AIG label show the ability to catch on to concepts quicker than the average child. Students are usually placed at the beginning of 4th grade in our county. |

IRI |
Informal Reading Inventory |
This is a one on one reading test given to all students in the last 9 weeks of school. We look for a year's growth in 3 areas: Fluency (rate of reading), accuracy (saying what is written, and Comprehension (understanding what is read). |

RtI |
Responsiveness to Instruction |
a name for the initiative to make sure struggling learners are recieving quality instruction and students with learning disabilities are identified early and served effectively. Students who are not responding to regular classroom instruction move through tiers, or various levels or interventions. |

Students who require additional interventions to achieve in the classroom have "tier" paperowrk. There are 4 tiers: 1. regular instruction 2. continuie 1 plus one intervention 3. continue 1, 2, and possible testing for disability 4. currently being tested |
| IEP |
Idividualized Education Plan |
These are forms filled out when a student in placed EC. You would meet with myself and the EC teacher and an administrator each year and go over goals and weaknesses. |
| DEP |
Differentiated Education Plan |
(4th grade and up in most cases) This form is an action plan for students placed AIG. I fill it out based on what accommodations and challenges I provide your gifted student in class. You will meet with the teacher and resign each year since each teacher does something different. |
