Students/teachers compete against the WATCH D.O.G.S in a friendly game of kickball.  The grade levels (K-2/3-4/5-6) are the kickers and the WATCH D.O.G.S  play defense. Students need parent permission to play.   Food is available so come and eat dinner too.   Watch for a note with details.  Come out and cheer!  Lots of good MVE family fun!

 Winter PBIS Party

On Friday, January 20th, K-1 students were rewarded with a PBIS Winter Snowball Party. While listening to winter music, the students threw paper snowballs, ice skated on paper plates and had a wonderful time.   Second grades have scheduled their event for Friday, January 27th.  Special thanks to our PBIS Committee for this great idea!  What a good way to recycle our used paper too!

fund.

 TEENS FOR JEANS SERVICE PROJECT

                 January 17, 2012 - February 10, 2012

MVE PTO is sponsoring a worthwhile community service project called TEENS FOR JEANS. Our school could win $5,000.  Please send in gently-worn jeans of any size or style between January 17-Feb. 10.  There is a collection bin at the front of the school.  Thank you for your support!

 Sixth Grade Holocaust Project

As part of a study on the Holocaust, Mrs. Gates' 6th grade class will be collecting canned goods to donate to local food banks and churches. In our Literature Circle novels, we're learning how food was so scare and there was a daily struggle for our characters to find food. Our goal is to collect 83,000 ounces of food, to symbolize the number of people that died in the Warsaw ghetto from disease and starvation. Daily assignment have been given to students to help collect and inventory our food collections. In math class, we will be graphing and comparing our food collections along the way, working with fractions and percentages. Please encourage your family members and neighbors to donate any canned food items to our needy community. Thank you for your support towards our goal!

 Math Homework Tips

  Math  Homework Tips

·    Encourage your child to use her/his daily planner and keep up with all math assignments

· If you do not understand your child’s math assignment, communicate with his/her teacher

· If you have a computer available in your home, use one of the math resources listed on the teacher’s or MVE’s web sites.

· Use household chores/shopping/family activities to reinforce math learning such as cooking or buying items. In the upper grades, talk about percentages and discounts as you shop.

· Make sure your first/second grade child knows the basic addition/subtraction facts. By the end of the  second grade, students should start memorizing the multiplication facts. In third grade, students should know their multiplication facts quickly and accurately.      Talk about time with your child using a digital and an analog clock as appropriate for their grade level. Reinforcing the concept of time, is very helpful to the math teacher and is a life skill for your child.

 Driven to Read

Your MVE child has a special opportunity to participate in a reading incentive program called "Driven to Read."  National spokesperson, Dusty Davis, visited our school on October 14th to help kick off the program, which incorporates fun into our reading homework.
"Driven to Read" is a merit-based reading program designed to  encourage children to increase their reading proficiency through the power of racing. Students in the program must read for 15 minutes to gain 1 mile on the track. Each student has been given a reading log.  The greater the mileage, the greater the reward.

25 miles = bookmark

50 miles = pencil

100 miles = bumper sticker

150 miles = bracelet

200 miles = medal

250 miles = small trophy

300 miles = t-shirt and checkered flag

With 300 miles, students are entered into the overall winners drawing for a VIP race package which includes a pit tour and four tickets to the next Camping World Series Truck Race in our area.

Dusty Davis, a national racer in the Truck Racing Series, spoke to our students about the importance of reading. He showed the students pictures of the documents he had to read for his occupation including manual, contracts, NASCAR rules and regulations, information about cars, trucks, tires, truck parts, etc.  Students were able to see all the technical reading that race car/truck racers have to do in their professions.

 New Parent Assistance Portal

Announcing  New Parent Portal

Catawba County Schools is pleased to announce a new online resource for parents.  Through the Parent Assistant website, you will be able to monitor your child’s attendance and grades.  Each family will receive a letter that contains your private username and password.  The schools are required to ask parents to come to the school to get your letter and show your identification at that time.  If you have children at JMFS or FTF, Mountain View will give you your family username and password.  You will not have to go to those sites.

You may pick up your family letter any day from 7:45-4:00. We will also have letters available at the check-in for Game Night on Friday, January 27 from 6:45-8:45 or Wednesday, February 1 from 4:00-7:00.  Please remember to bring your photo ID.
