Memorial Day May 28, 2012
Veteran’s History Project – This project is sponsored by the Library of Congress. Their mission is to preserve and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. Stories can be told through personal narratives (audio or video), correspondence (letters, postcards, v-mail, and personal diaries), visual materials (photographs, drawings, scrapbooks). If you know a veteran and would like to participate in this activity, check out the website to download a kit. http://www.loc.gov/vets/about.html
Experiencing War – Stories from the Veterans History Project - This is a great resource that provides direct link for the project above. You find firsthand account from soldiers that served in World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf. Reading some of these heroic stories would be a good way to talk about our heroes with your children. http://www.loc.gov/vets//stories/ |

The Big Bad Wolf has nothing on these kinders as they measure the strength of their breath! As part of their Fairy Tale Unit, they learned about how strong a wolf would have to actually blow in order to take down a straw or stick house. They measured and then compared their own strength with a partner by using anemometers and a Labquest. They predicted if they could, then tried blowing down straw and stick houses they built. This was a great segue into weather and the strength of wind. The Science House (NC State) loaned the equipment to Ms. Lydick to use with her class.
With the help of our 4th grade reading buddies, Sheila Smith, and GPSs provided by the Central Office the kinders took on another form of technology. Many of the little people knew something about a GPS because their parent(s) have one in their car. However, they got some first hand experience when they used them to search for treasures. The students each had their own GPS but worked in teams of four to locate three different caches per team. These were buried in the 3-6 playground, track area, K-2 playground, and gazebo area. This tied in with our Maps/Location Unit.

PTO Treats MVE to Special BMX Show
As a reward for a successful fundraising campaign in the fall, the students were treated to a special BMX show. Three professional riders jumped ramps and performed tricks to the delight of the faculty and students. Thirty-eight students earned front row seats because they sold 10 or more items. The riders reminded students that it took years of dedication and practice to be able to do tricks and stunts. They also cautioned students about safety and wearing the proper equipment when bike riding. It was a great show and lots of fun!

The Kinders had an up-close experience with animals when they visited the Lazy 5 Ranch. The Lazy 5 Ranch is home to over 750 animals from 6 continents. The horse-drawn wagon took them along a 3 1/2 mile "safari" ride.
When they finished the ride, they fed animals in a petting area, had a picnic, and walked along paths seeing even more animals. It was great fun! |

As part of a study on the Holocaust, Mrs. Gates' 6th grade class will be collecting canned goods to donate to local food banks and churches. In our Literature Circle novels, we're learning how food was so scarce and there was a daily struggle for our characters to find food. Our goal is to collect 83,000 ounces of food, to symbolize the number of people that died in the Warsaw ghetto from disease and starvation. Daily assignment have been given to students to help collect and inventory our food collections. In math class, we will be graphing and comparing our food collections along the way, working with fractions and percentages. Please encourage your family members and neighbors to donate any canned food items to our needy community. Thank you for your support towards our goal!

Math Homework Tips
· Encourage your child to use her/his daily planner and keep up with all math assignments
· If you do not understand your child’s math assignment, communicate with his/her teacher
· If you have a computer available in your home, use one of the math resources listed on the teacher’s or MVE’s web sites.
· Use household chores/shopping/family activities to reinforce math learning such as cooking or buying items. In the upper grades, talk about percentages and discounts as you shop.
· Make sure your first/second grade child knows the basic addition/subtraction facts. By the end of the second grade, students should start memorizing the multiplication facts. In third grade, students should know their multiplication facts quickly and accurately. Talk about time with your child using a digital and an analog clock as appropriate for their grade level. Reinforcing the concept of time, is very helpful to the math teacher and is a life skill for your child.
