Wizards' Team
(updated on 8.11.08)

2008-2009

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

Welcome to Mill Creek Middle School!  We are very excited to have you on our team and are looking forward to a successful year.  Here is some information that will be helpful as you enter middle school.

Communication – Teachers communicate with parents in a variety of ways.  These include individual parent conferences, telephone calls, notes in the agenda, and progress reports.  If you have any questions or need to schedule a conference during the school year, please feel free to call the school at 828-241-2711.  We may be reached during our planning time (8:45 am – 10:00 am) and by email.  Together we can ensure that your child will be successful.  We look forward to a wonderful year.

Homework – Students should expect frequent assignments in all classes.  Special projects and research may be required.  If your child tells you that he/she never has homework, you may wish to contact the teachers!  Homework is to be completed and turned in on the due date.  Late work will be penalized unless the student has an excused absence.  Our team will utilize a daily AGENDA that your child will receive to help keep up with important dates and assignments.  Our team will use the AGENDA to communicate with you from time to time.  Students will bring their AGENDA to our weekly team meeting. Parents, we expect you to sign your child’s agenda!

Please help - We will gladly accept donations of the following items:  Kleenex, anti-bacterial hand sanitizer, pencils, loose-leaf notebook paper, and band-aids!  Thank you for your anticipated donation.

Reading Program – Your child will participate in the school-wide Accelerated Reading (AR) program.  Because all teachers at MCMS support the reading program, each student is expected to carry his/her library book to EACH class, including homeroom.  You will receive more specific information about the reading program from Mrs. Guthrie or Mrs. Buff during the first week of school.

Lockers and Locks – Lockers will be assigned in homeroom.  This year each student will be required to rent a combination lock from the school for his/her locker.  The cost will be $3.00.  Locks will be available through RTT on the first day of school.

Book bags/Backpacks – Book bags will be kept in the lockers during academic classes.  Please keep locker size in mind when purchasing book bags.  Our lockers measure 9 x 11 x 27 inches.  Large book bags will not fit into this small space.  In addition, the large binders/trapper keepers will not fit into these lockers.

Other information – You will receive detailed information about the lunch program, daily schedule, field trips, etc., the first week of school through your child’s homeroom teacher.  Your child will also get a student handbook that will answer many of your questions.  We look forward to meeting with you during the school year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  Together we can make a difference!

From:  Joy Buff, Exceptional Children’s Program

If your child receives services through the Exceptional Children’s Program, you will be contacted during the academic year to participate in developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP).  You will always be involved in any decision making regarding your child’s placement and education.  Because EC students focus on organization and work completion, I require a parent signature in the student’s agenda each night.
