Crusaders' Team

2010-2011

Dear Parents and Student:

Welcome to a new school year at Mill Creek Middle School!  The Crusaders are very excited to have you on their team.  We are looking forward to a successful year!  Below is some information that will guide you toward a productive school year as a Crusader.

Communication:  If you would like to schedule a conference with us, we are available during our team planning each day.  We are also available after school.  Please call the school or send a message with your child so that we can arrange a time that is convenient for us all.  Also, be aware that we invite your phone calls and Emails.  Your questions are important to us.

Discipline:  The following is a list of guidelines that we expect students to follow in all classes.

1.        Show respect for yourself, others and school property.

2.       Be on time and prepared for class.

3.       Listening is a sign of courtesy.  Be courteous to teachers and students by listening to them when they are speaking.

4.      No gum.

5.       Consume food and beverages only in the lunchroom or in supervised areas with permission from staff.

6.       Late work will be penalized.

7.        Learn to be responsible for yourself.

8.       Dress according to school dress code.

We will enforce the following consequences for misbehavior:

1.        Warning

2.       Team conference with the student

3.       Phone call to student’s parents

4.      Parent conference

5.       Office referral

Please consult the student handbook for discipline, dress code, tardy, and attendance policies and consequences.

Attendance:  100% attendance would be wonderful!  However, if your child is absent, please notify the school so that we will not disturb you at work to confirm the absence. When calling, please ask for your child’s missed assignments.  You will also need to send a written excuse when your child returns to school.

Homework:  Students should expect frequent assignments in all classes.  Special projects and research may be required occasionally.  If your child tells you that he/she never has homework, you may wish to contact us. All homework assignments should be written down daily in your child's agenda.  Please check your child’s agenda frequently and sign at the end of each week.   Mrs. Burris will be checking for your signatures.  Students will not be allowed to go to the media center until agenda is current.    Homework is expected to be completed and turned in on the due date.  Late work will be penalized unless the student has had an excused absence.

Restroom:  Students are allowed to visit the restrooms before and after school, during locker breaks, and before or after lunch.  If there is a medical situation that needs our attention, please make sure we are informed.  It is never our intention to endanger the health of our students.

Phones:  Classroom phones are available to students only in cases of emergency or at the discretion of the teacher. Arrangements for transportation home and for after- school activities should be made prior to your child’s arrival at school.

Recommended Supplies:  We recommend that students have wide ruled loose leaf notebook paper, eight 2-pocket folders, #2 pencils (large supply), yellow highlighters, blue or black ink pens only, and colored pencils.  Mill Creek will provide each student with an agenda notebook for them to record their assignments in on a daily basis.  The Crusaders would also greatly appreciate any and all donations of Kleenex, Ziploc storage bags, pencils, wide ruled loose-leaf notebook paper, index cards, Lysol spray, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, and latex gloves. (Thanks to you in advance for your donations!)  Your child will need a book bag to carry materials between home and school.  Once at school, the book bag should remain in their locker for classroom safety purposes.  Please do not purchase rolling book bags or oversized book bags because they will not fit in lockers. Combination locks must be rented at school for a cost of $3.00 for the entire year. These are commercial grade locks and do not have to be cut off when students forget combinations.

Accelerated Reader ProgramBeginning the first nine weeks, Crusaders will be expected to actively participate in the Mill Creek Accelerated Reader Program.  Students must earn a designated number of points each nine weeks.  Your Language Arts teacher will tell you the number of points your class will need.  These points will be incorporated into each student’s Language Arts and Social Studies grade.

Rewards:  Throughout the school year we will celebrate your child’s success with team socials and AR rewards with snacks, going outdoors or showing movies that are rated G, PG, or PG-13.  These movies support our curriculum and character education program.  Enclosed with this letter is a form for you to complete and return to your social studies teacher.   Donations would be appreciated for reward snacks.  Please contact team teachers if interested.

Finally, we look forward to meeting you throughout the school year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  We realize that your child’s education is very important to you.  Together we can make a difference!

Sincerely,

The Crusaders
