Lauren H. Reads the Preamble of the US Constitution To Her Classmates As Congressman McHenry Listens

Students on the Mighty Maverick team at Maiden Middle School received a real life lesson on the workings of the US government on Monday, October 18, 2010.  US Congressman Patrick McHenry spent 50 minutes with the 124 7th graders.  He explained how the lives of these 12 year olds are directly affected by decisions made at all different levels of government.  During their dialogue, he asked questions like “How come you are in school 7 hours a day?”  “Who decided you needed to be in school 180 days a year?”  Students were able to interact with the Congressman as they together discussed how rules set by governmental agencies affect their lives.  Congressman McHenry concluded his remarks by encouraging the students to do their best in school, obtain a certification after high school (from a community college, trade school, the military or 4 year college) and to stay true to their values.
