Appalachian State

Anatomy and Physiology Camp in June is offered to high school students.  This six night camp costs $1,100 but has no prerequisites except a strong interest in the sciences and adequate science and math background to understand the labs and lectures.  Group activities, exploration of a host of health related careers and much more!

Girl's and Boy's State

Sponsored through local American Legion Auxiliaries, these summer programs give students the opportunity to stay on a college campus for an intense week long camp concentrating on North Carolina state government and politics.  Only students who will have  completed their junior year and are in the top of their class are nominated.

Girl's State and Boy's State are separate camps and held during separate weeks. There is no cost to the students.  More information on Girl's State can be found at their website. Information on Boy's State can also be found on their website.

 

Broyhill Leadership Conference (BLC)

BLC is open to rising 10th graders through 2011 high school graduates who are interested in personal development and leadership training.  The summer camp will be held at Queens University of Charlotte and the cost is $220.00 for 11 meals and four nights' lodging. Catawba County Schools

Special in-depth SUMMER PROGRAMS  are available to rising juniors and seniors. 

  • Criminal Justice (law, Fire, EMS)
  • C3 Leadership Academy
  • Duke Energy Engineering
  • Health Careers

Applications are available in guidance.  Students will complete four to six days of instructional training followed by on-site hands-on experience. These internships require an application and are very competitive. DEADLINE: April 15th

 

SUMMER SCHOOL

Will be offered free of charge at Maiden High School from June 13 - June 30.  Students can only take courses for credit recovery and not new credit.  Criteria is:

  • Failed with a grade of 61-69 in English, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Biology, Physical Science, Civics, World History or US History
  • Failed due to attendance
  • EOC course only.  Students must have an EOC score of level 3 or 4 proficiency score
  • Any CCS discipline at any level removal from program
  • 2 tardies constitute 1 absence-possible removal from summer school
  • ALL WORK must be competed by Jun 30, 2011 at 11:30 am

Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge

During this five-day residential summer program, you will learn about entrepreneurship, the important role of capitalism plays in our economy, principled leadership and ethical decision making. June sessions will be held at Wingate university.  Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders can apply.  Cost is $100.

Salvation Army (ages 6-16)

A summer day camp is being offered by the Salvation Army in Hickory.  The camp is from 6:00 am to 6: 00 pm daily.

  • Weekly trips to local swimming pool, movie theater, and skating rink
  • Special Teen Exclusive Programs
  • $25.00 registration fee
  • $75.00 per week ($70.00 each additional child)
  • Includes breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and all activity fees
  • DSS Vouchers Accepted

Summer Ventures in Math and Science



Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented North Carolina residents who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for intensive study.

A statewide program of the University of North Carolina system, SVSM is administered by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Five campuses of the university system host the SVSM institutes, each of which has its own director. Click here for a video overview of the programs.

SVSM is intended for students who choose this special math/science academic opportunity and are able to forgo other summer plans to participate during their assigned time.

Deadline is January 31st for submittal.

UNC Wilmington Need 2 Lead

 N2L is a an intense leadership weekend created and organized by the UNCW Office of Admissions and is designed for action-oriented rising high school juniors who want to make a difference in their communities. The program aims to enhance the students’ leadership skills and help them establish a community service project of their choice.  The weekend takes place during the summer. Criteria for students:

  • Nomination from school administrator or local community leader
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.5
  • Demonstrated commitment to civic/community engagement and/or exhibited noteworthy leadership qualities
  • Desire to matriculate at a four-year college or university

UNC Wilmington

Seniors that will be attending UNC Wilmington in the fall can apply to take summer school courses.  There are many advantages in taking classes during the summer sessions.  Students have the opportunity to meet other UNCW students and make new friends before fall classes begin; they will meet faculty members and become familiar with campus offices and the surrounding Wilmington community; and they can complete a semester of English, math, science or any other course, enabling them to register for other classes during the fall or transfer these credits to another university.

C-Tech Computers and Technology - Current rising sophomores and rising juniors are invited to participate in this summer program to develop and sustain the interests of participants in engineering and the sciences.
