How and why did England attempt to colonize the area that would become NC?

We finish our RAFT assignments today and begin looking at Raleigh's second trip to the NC area.  This one is to build a colony under the leadership of Ralph Lane-not such a good idea.

We do our last bit of explorer review and completely change gears to colonization on North America.

 Today, we finish our explorer puzzle and begin looking at England's attempts at putting a colony on the Outer Banks of NC.

Sir Walter Raleigh wanted to put a colony in NC.  How'd that work out for him.  Today, we find out.  We'll view a powerpoint about his initial attempts and then, pretend we're reporters sharing the news.

How did European powers begin exploring North and South America?

 Today, we're reading about the history of Europe and how their turned their interest to the exploration of North and South America.  We're reading from the US history book and answering several questions.

We took time today to finish yesterday's reading assignment.  We'll go over it tomorrow at the beginning of class.

 Who began exploring the New World for Europe and why did they go?

We begin looking at individuals who began exploring the New World.  We'll look at who sent them, and why they went.  We'll take this information and construct a data table to organize it.

 We complete the first half of our explorers list and go over it today.  We add 11 explorers to that one to bring to total to 20.

We have to finish our vocabulary puzzles from Friday.

We will focus on the native groups of North America.  We divide them into four cultural/geographic groups and create a table to organize the information.  We'll be using the 8th graders' NC book for this task.
