Week 1:  March 12, 13, 15
Week 2:  March 19, 20, 22
Week 3:  March 26,27,29
Week 4:  April 2, 3, 5

What is this program about?

All 3rd-6th grade boys that attend Banoak Elementary, Blackburn Elementary, and Mountain View Elementary are invited to sign up in the Foard Tiger Youth Wrestling League.  The cost is $30 per wrestler.  The cost covers insurance (Jeff Kincaid at Nationwide Insurance 328-2667) and a team t-shirt.  The season will only be a few weeks, and the emphasis is to teach the kids the basics of wrestling and get them excited about wrestling for the Tigers one day.  Kids will be put onto 4 different teams, and each team will wrestle the other teams in the league twice.  Kids will be matched up with someone their size and age.  Coach Carey will run the league, but assistant coaches at Foard and JFMS along with high school wrestlers will coach the teams.

If wrestlers are interested in developing their skills after the Youth League season; then they can join the "Eye of the Tiger" Wrestling Club.  Since 2008, the Foard Wrestling program has became one of the most participated sport programs at Foard HS, and the most successful.  Come be a part of the tradition!

If you have any questions; then email Coach Carey at:  mike_carey@catawbaschools.net

Why Wrestle?

*Since wrestling has weight classes, anyone of any size or weight can participate in wrestling.

*It teaches one to be able to defend himself.

*It's natural...kids wrestle around with family members as early as 1 or 2 years old.

*It's an individual sport.  One can get as good as he wants to be if he dedicates himself.

*It's a team sport.  Teammates practice, bleed, and sweat together which creates a great bond.  Even if you lose your match, your team can still win.

*It teaches one to be able to handle wins with humility, and losses with a determination to get better.

*It's a chance to participate in the oldest sport in the world.

*It's great exercise and teaches one to live a healthy lifestyle.

*Develops mental toughness.

*They can be part of the championship Foard Wrestling Program.

This Youth Wrestling League is REAL wrestling.  The only differences are:

 1. We will use a 1 minute running clock for all 3 periods.

2. We don't weigh in before matches (just during registration).

3. No weight classes; wrestlers are grouped together with others of similar weight (Madison weights), and we have as many weight classes as we need.

4. We don't require head gear, wrestling shoes, or singlets, though they are allowed.

5.  We don't penalize "locking hands" or "stalling", just encourage the wrestles not to do it.

6.  We don't keep team score, just the individual match score.

DO's:

*Encourage your son. Wrestling is an extremely tough sport, and losses can be tough on a kid.  Stay positive!  Wins will come the longer they are around the sport, and their technique becomes better.

*Talk to your son about being a good sport when they win as well as when they lose.

*Be on time for the start and finish of all wrestling events.  These coaches are working for free, so please don't make them wait around.

*Use our concessions if possible.  We have drinks, candy, and shirts at a reasonable price.  All the money goes back to the H.S. kids coaching so that they can go to wrestling camp at ASU.

*Talk to your son's coach or Coach Carey if there any problems.

*Let your son's coach know if you are going to miss a practice or match.

*Have a great time!  Your son is only young once, so keep him involved with sports!

*Don't let your son quit.  If you let you son quit, then you are teaching him that it's ok to quit something just because it's hard or because he's not successful in it.  Make him at least finish the season.

On a personal note, I told my son before the season started, that he didn't have to wrestle just because his dad was the head H.S. coach, but there was no way he was quitting if he decided to start.  After he lost the first time, he got upset and said he didn't want to wrestle anymore.  I told him that quitting wasn't an option.  I told him to go spend time with his teammates and coaches and try to have fun and learn. He won some more that first season, and also lost some more that season, but really learned to love it by the end, and eventually became a pretty good wrestler for a kindergartner (8-3 final record).  Don't let your son quit... the value to persevere is something that I am sure you want to pass on to him.

DONT'S:

*Don't cheer against another kid...just cheer for your kid and his teammates.

*Don't expect to be good at this sport in just 4 weeks.  All of our better wrestlers have been wrestling for years. You may win every match at this level, but your technique will need to improve into middle school and certainly into high school with the kind of schedule we wrestle. Shoot to get better each year!

*Don't bad mouth any kid or coach.  You will be asked to leave if you are doing either the very first time this happens.

*Don't get too caught up into wins and losses.  At this age, the technique the kids have isn't developed enough to beat the athletic kids who have just a little technique.  However, as they get older into the high school years, the techniqually advanced kids will win out.

One program, one goal...

To build champions on and off the mat.

When the Youth League season ends, wrestlers are encouraged to start participating in the "Eye of the Tiger Wrestling Club" which consists of middle school and high school wrestlers working extra in the off-season.  This is not required, but so many of our wrestlers are now becoming very dedicated to becoming champions and being the best that they can be, so we offer this opportunity.  There is NO cost, and wrestlers will be matched up with others of similar size, age, and talent level.  If your wrestler needs a break after the season; then that is fine too.  I encourage all rising 7th graders and their parents to contact the head Jacobs Fork M.S. Wrestling coach.  The middle school season starts at the first of November.  His name is Coach David Shook, and he can be reached at:  david_shook@catawbaschools.net
