NEWTON - A 2003 graduate of Fred T. Foard High School died in a car wreck late Saturday night on N.C. 10.

Joseph Robert Ingerling, 19, of Vine Arbor Drive in Mountain View, was killed about 11 p.m. when a Chevrolet pickup, driven by Glenn Boyd Smith, 73, of Vale, crossed the center line of N.C. 10 near Hickory/Lincolnton Highway, said Trooper B.L. Buchanan of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Ingerling was driving a Mitsubishi passenger sedan headed eastbound on N.C. 10 when the car was struck head-on.

Ingerling was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, and was listed in critical condition Sunday.

Four passengers in the Mitsubishi were also transported to area hospitals.

• Jody Helms, 17, of Old Shelby Road, was flown to Wake Forest and was listed in stable condition.

• Russell Clontz, 19, of Lancer Drive in Hickory, was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center and was listed in stable condition.

• Darnell Scott, 24, of West Fifteenth Street, Newton, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, and was listed in critical condition.

• Derick Blanton, 19, of Woodridge Circle in Hickory, was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center, and was listed in stable condition.

Buchanan said Smith could be charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, pending a consultation with the district attorney’s office.
