ASU Mountaineer Summer Reading Program
Briley H., a 3rd grader in Mrs. Darden’s class, was honored this past Saturday at Appalachian State University during their recent football game. Briley participated in the Mountaineer Summer Reading Program, sponsored by the Reich College of Education, as part of Catawba Elementary’s Summer Reading Program. During the summer Briley read 203 books! This qualified him as the top reader in grades 1st-3rd in Catawba County. On Saturday, November 2nd, he and his parents traveled to Boone, NC and were treated to a special behind the scenes tour of the locker room, players walk, and ASU’s trophy room. Briley also had pictures made on the field before a BBQ lunch complete with slides and a jump house for the winners to enjoy! During the half time show, Briley was recognized on the 50 yard line along with the 4th-6th and 7th-8th grade winners from Catawba and other surrounding counties. Briley also had time to tour the campus, see the ASU Marching Band perform, and get his picture made with Yosef, the Mountaineers mascot! Congratulations Briley-we are so proud of you!
Catawba had 60 students participate in the ASU Summer Reading Program. Those students read a total of 815 books this summer! Briley had the top number of books read in grades 1-3 and Colin H. had the top number of books read in grades 4-6! All students who participated will receive a prize from ASU! Way to go all our readers...we will participate again next summer!
