Make it a Trio....Katie S. Becomes 3rd Lady Bear to Score 1000 Career Points

Friday, February 27, 2009 was a bitter-sweet night for senior starter, Katie S. The Lady Bears had advanced to the Sectional Finals but were defeated by Mitchell High School, 52-34. However, during the last quarter of her last high school basketball game, Katie became the third BHHS Lady Bear to score 1000 or more career points during the 08-09 season. That's quite an accomplishment for Katie and teammates Emily and Kellie. Pictures above include Katie hitting her 1000th point at the foul line, the crowd displaying their delight, and Coach Compton and Coach Laws congratulating Katie later in the game.
Emily B. Joins Teammate in the "1000 Point Club"

You’ve heard the cliché that lightning never strikes twice. That’s not the case for the Lady Bear basketball team this season. Friday, February 13, was a lucky day for Lady Bear senior, Emily B. who scored her 1000th point during the game at West Caldwell High School. Emily scored from the free-throw line after being fouled with 5:19 on the clock in the fourth quarter; teammate Kellie R. reached the 1000 pt. mark earlier in the month. Pictures include Emily at the foul line right before scoring her 1000th point and after the game with Coach Shane Compton and Asst. Coach Randy Laws. Congratulations, Emily!

Bunker Hill's Kellie R. Reaches 1000 - February 3, 2009

Congratulations to Kellie R. who scored her 1000th point as a Lady Bear Tuesday evening, February 3. The Bears were playing away at Hibriten High School and during the second quarter Kellie hit a 3-pointer taking her to over 1000 points for her high school career. Kellie started the game needing 10 points to reach her goal and the anticipation grew with each basket; she scored 14 which was more than enough to put her over. Pictures above include Kellie with Coach Shane Compton and a crowd shot where small 1000 signs were displayed when Kellie's shot went in. Congratulations, Kellie!

The Shining Star Recognition program is a unique and wonderful way to recognize young people in Catawba County Schools who exemplify character by going above and beyond what is expected. A Shining Star is a student who displays random acts of good character in and/or out of school. These acts are based on the Character Education concepts adopted by the Catawba County Board of Education.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE AT BUNKER HILL |
| Friday, October 3: Several classes throughout the day had the opportunity to visit the Civil War reenactment provided by the 12th NC Company A out of Newton. One of the men gave a demonstration of ammo and talked about what the soldiers ate back then. He also talked about camp life, where the men slept, and what they did when they got sick or injured. One of the stations had women talking about the life and duties that women had during the Civil War time period. The student’s favorite station was the weapons demonstration and drilling. This gave the students an idea of how the soldiers had to stay in formation when they went to battle.

BHHS HORTICULTURE CLASSES |

At Bunker Hill High School, the Horticulture II Landscape Design and Maintenance students are involved in learning many new skills in plant production and maintenance. In growing the annual poinsettia crop, the students must perform all of the skills in the production of 500 poinsettia plants on a day-to-day schedule. The students are shown here measuring the growth of the poinsettias, also inspecting the Chapin irrigation system, and monitoring the insect population in the greenhouse. The students recently renovated the older greenhouse with a new double-poly plastic, concreted the walkways, installed the bench system, and replaced the cooling pads.
Also, Horticulture students are learning how to use a farm level or transit. These students are performing a profile level exercise to determine the elevation points next to the new polycarbonate greenhouse. They are surveying out a drainage line to remove excess water from the outside of the greenhouse in order to move the water to a drainage collection pipe. The students must be able to set up a level and read a survey rod. With the information obtained from the field, the student calculates the change in elevation and the percent slope. The students will plot their finding using excel on the computers in the classroom. Horticulture II students are learning real life skills that are needed in today's jobs. |

The students and staff of Bunker Hill paused this morning to remember and honor those who were tragically killed on September 11, 2001. Over the school’s public address system, Principal Jeff Taylor began with a touching remembrance that took us back to where we were on that fateful day. We observed of a moment of silence and recited the Pledge of Allegiance together throughout the building. The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem performed by the BHHS Concert Choir under the direction of Ms. Pam Farnsworth. | |
