Hi! My name is Denise Heavner. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist. I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Communication Disorders. Currently, I serve Banoak Elementary School and Blackburn Elementary School.
I enjoy working with small groups and focusing on what the students need for them to be more successful at school. We do a variety of activities: target sound practice, reading and writing sentences, vocabulary enrichment as well as follow simple recipe directions to name a few.
I am a mother of two. I have a son, Ryan and a daughter, Heidi. We have a German Shepherd named Charlie. My son has a rabbit, he named Squeezer, and a Beta fish named Wall-E. My husband has a blue and gold Macaw named Mattie. We love animals! As you can see, I keep busy. In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano and participating in church activities.
My Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)is Wendy Thomas. She graduated from Caldwell Community College with an Associates Degree in Applied Science Speech-Language Pathology Assistant. This has given her the special training and education needed to conduct Speech-Language therapy under my guidance.
Her goal is to help students improve their communication skills through structured activities, games, and fun activities during therapy sessions. She will send homework practice sheets home once a month. Home practice can help increase your child's rate of progress.
She is married to Kevin Thomas and has one step-daughter Emily Thomas. She also loves animals, photography, camping in the mountains, bicycling, and going to the beach.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding your child. We look forward to working with the parents and students.
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010!
