Accelerated Reader
What is "Accelerated Reader?" It is a computer-based reading management program where students select a book, read it, and take a computerized comprehension test. Students earn points based on the book's point value and the number of correct answers.
How is the point value of a book determined? The point value and reading level for a book is set by Advantage Learning Systems and is based on the length and difficulty of the book.
How does this program fit into the curriculum? The AR program supplements the reading program already in place. Teachers offer guidance in terms of the reading level, but students choose from hundreds of books on that level. Students read books they choose, at their own pace, and receive immediate feedback following each test.
Do all schools have the same tests? Individual schools purchase tests from the thousands of tests available. Banoak currently has tests for over 3000 books. We add more tests each year to give students even more choices.
