 Nutritional Advisory Council

Catawba County Schools is pleased to have several Nutritional Advisory Councils (NAC) in our elementary schools.  The NAC groups consist of  ten to twelve students who meet monthly to do fun activities, like sample new food items, and to discuss nutrition in our school cafeterias.

They also have the opportunity to host an annual art contest.  All students at the school are encouraged to enter.  Using their imagination, students are asked to draw a picture with a specific theme. This year the theme was “Fuel Your Imagination”. The art work is judged on creativity, theme relation, nutritional foods illustrated, and age-related artwork.  Alexis B. from Lyle Creek Elementary won for the K-4 grade level contest.  Keyona H. from St. Stephens Elementary won the 5-8 grade level contest.  Keyona was also the winner for our district.  Her art work will be judged at the state level in April.

Each NAC group can enter the “NAC of the Year” contest by completing a special nutritional project and compiling at twenty page notebook with the results of the project they have chosen to work on through the school year.  This year’s district winner was Claremont Elementary NAC.  Their book will be judged on the state level in June at the School Nutrition Association Annual Conference.

Harriett Ignoffo organized the winning “NAC of the Year” project at Claremont Elementary. Their project was to promote healthy eating with the consumption of more fruits and vegetables.  To do this they created many colorful and informative bulletin boards throughout the year. They put together a fruit and vegetable recipe book. They did many food test tasting meetings including one where they made a fresh fruit salad and topped it off with fat free cool whip. Harriett and these students did a wonderful job with this promotion. Congratulations Claremont Elementary NAC!

St. Stephens Elementary NAC group and Lisa Caldwell was the runner up in the “NAC of the Year” contest. They did a great job making students aware of the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. Her group served the school breakfast during National School Breakfast Week. Thanks for all your hard work!
