Banoak and Blackburn Elementary by Becky Gladden and Susan Winstead
Banoak Elementary and Blackburn Elementary 6th grade Battle of the Books teams squared off for a mock competition on Thursday, February 12. Banoak's BOB team traveled after school over to Blackburn to test their book knowledge (so far) and to get a taste of what the real competition will be like in March. The teams competed through six rounds of questions. Banoak emerged victorious at the end of the hour. Team members and coaches enjoyed meeting each other and swapping winning game strategies.
Oxford News by Ellen Sigmon
Mrs. Sigmon asked my teachers to come to the media center for paparazzi photos to promote the bookfair next week. I have several pictures I have taken of them dressed as movie stars (feather boa, sunglasses, etc.) to put with the classroom wish list pockets to go along with the theme "Lights, Camera, Book Fair!" I didn't know if this would be something for the media page or not. (I also don't know which of them will be willing to have their photos posted!)
Also, I am working with Ms. Lamb's class on a big Iditarod map. Groups of students are scaling up one of the maps on the web page to twice its length and width. I have taken photos of the students working and will take photos once they are finished. I did a short PowerPoint on Map Making and Scale to introduce this to them. I had already supplied them with gridded cartoon characters to scale up to a bigger grid, and they had done that in math class previous to this map.

Bunker Hill High School Media Club visited Bethlehem United Methodist Child Development Center in Claremont. They have adopted this daycare. Three or four times a year they visit the center to read with them. They also have a special activity related to the types of books that are shared with them. In March the theme was nursery rhymes and fairy tales. The students taught the little ones several popular nursery rhymes and songs and read fairy tales to them. Children made bumble bees to go along with the "I'm Bringing Home a Baby Bumble Bee" song. It is hard to tell which ones had more fun, the media club or the little ones.
Bunker Hill Media Assistants created book displays with new books.

Libby Bagby, the author of Lucky’s Plot visited Lyle Creek Elementary on Fri., Jan. 23. Mrs. Bagby spoke to all fourth grade students about her book and about the fact that the dog in the story is a Plot hound, the North Carolina State Dog. In her presentation she described at length the legislative process which is followed to create a new state symbol. To the delight of everyone present, Mrs. Bagby also brought her own Plot Hound, Lucky. He is a dog that she rescued from an accident along the highway. Lucky won the hearts of everyone attending and made it a very special event! Following her presentation Mrs. Bagby autographed books for anyone purchasing a copy of Lucky’s Plot.

Greetings from Clyde Campbell Elementary by Alice Angell, Media Coordinator December 17, 2008
We have been very busy this past semester. We began Big 6 integration with research on the very first day of school with Mrs. Debbie Elliott’s 5th grade classes. Mrs. Elliott’s classes were researching authors in our media lab. We especially concentrated on the correct creation of citations using OSLIS (an electronic citation maker). This extended to Mrs. Lisa Shull’s and Mrs. Andrea Quinn’s 6th graders and Mrs. Lyerly’s 5th graders as they came to the media lab to research the DAR topic “What message did the Gettysburg Address communicate to our war-torn nation in 1863? How are the ideals articulated in the speech still relevant for our country today?” Aside from learning to cite sources properly, this led to great discussions about task definition since the topic really required much thinking about. During this period, we became subscribers to World Book Online. This source proved very valuable for research about the topic.
Destiny training also was very important early on as all students in grades 3-6 were trained to use it. Second graders will be trained during second semester. Students love seeing the covers of the books online.
Startown Media Center by Wendy Hildebran November 5, 2008
Startown Elementary 4th graders recently completed a Big 6 project on U.S. presidents.
Students determined what information would be interesting to find out, learned to take three-column notes, then planned and created PowerPoint slide shows. Parents and other classes came to see the final products, and the project ended with a self evaluation. Mrs. Maggi Greer and Mrs. Wendy Hildebran collaborated on the project, working in the lab, media center, and classroom.

Startown's second graders enjoyed a walk around downtown Newton on October 31st using GPS devices to locate several waypoints. Working in groups, students navigated to the fire department, Walker Pharmacy, BB&T, Highlights, and back to the court square. Training was provided by Mrs. Linda McCray the day before the field trip, and Startown teachers and Mrs. Wendy Hildebran facilitated the walk.
Business employees were quite impressed with the young students' knowledge and skill with the GPS devices, and students had a very positive experience.

Maiden Middle Media Center by Karen Harris November 4, 2008
Linda McCray and Karen hosted a Technology Day for all the faculty and staff on election day. We hosted sessions for everyone in the morning on right brain/left brain learners, Big 6, Sharepoint, Schoolpads, Network Music, Photostory, MovieMaker, ClassScape and Plato. After lunch, teachers could choose from 3 different sessions each hour. The breakout sessions included blogs and wikis, podcasting, handhelds, personal response systems, and Inspiration. We had a very busy day with lots of excitement.
Eighth grade social studies classes have been researching the Columbian exchange. Art students have created photostories about different artists. The media center has also been home away from home as projectors have been mounted in all of our classrooms.

Sherrills Ford Media Center by Lara Morgan October 11, 2008
Author Election 2008 Sherrills Ford is getting into the election mode by holding a mock election that will promote readingfor SFES students Rather than voting for a president students will vote for an “Author of the Year.” There will be a Picture Book level and a Junior Book Level. Students can vote at one or both levels. Picture book level consists of Chris Van Allsburg, Jan Brett, Kevin Henkes and Jon Scieszka. Junior book level consists of Jerry Spinelli, Beverly Cleary, Andrew Clements, and Cornelia Funke. There will be a contest for students to write a speech promoting the author of their choice. The winning speeches will be read by the student during morning announcements. The speech should persuade others to vote for one author. Students will be encouraged to create banners that promote an author using a slogan or phrase. These can be displayed in the media center.
Community Projects Second grade students are creating community projects. One class created a city within a suburb within a town within a farm community. They used community construction to create their buildings, and brought items from home to finish their 3-D creation. Another class made a Community ABC book - created a PowerPoint slide for each letter - along with their typed description. These were then put into PhotoStory. The students came to the media center in pairs, read their sentences, and then we watched the movie.
Explorer Projects
The third graders are now working on an explorer project and using the media center for research as we follow the BIG6 model. Each class will come to the media center to place the date of their foundings into the Timeliner program, and then each class will put together and post their Explorer Timelines in the hall.
Apples to Oregon Project
First graders heard the book Apples to Oregon in the media center. Each student colored an apple and graphed it on the media center windows. All students came in, looked at the graph, and counted the apples.

River Bend Media Center News
by Staci Bumgarner September 26, 2008
Election bulletin board: I am working in partnership with my social studies teachers on various election events. We are spotlighting an election issue on each Friday morning RBTV broadcast so that students are made aware of where the 2008 candidates stand. So far, we have covered the war in Iraq, abortion and gun control. We have interviewed students to see if they can identify the Vice-Presidential candidates from their pictures. We will be hosting a school-wide vote in the Media Center on November 3rd.
A Banned Books display has been set up to celebrate Banned Books Week Sept. 29-Oct. 3. The display consists of banned and challenged books owned by River Bend Middle School.
"Lunch Bunch" is held one Friday each month in the River Bend media center. Students sign up with their lunch teachers and bring a book and their lunches to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere to read and eat. Library tables are covered with tablecloths and sappy elevator music is played quietly in the background to set a relaxing "restaurant" atmosphere. | | |
