Requirements for employment for teachers are . . .  

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must hold or be qualified to hold at least the "A" certificate issued by the State Department of Public Instruction, Raleigh, North Carolina and must be considered Highly Qualified (HQ).  (The "A" certificate must be based upon at least a Bachelors' degree in Education).

APPLICATION

An official application must be filed in HRMS.

REFERENCES

At least three references who have knowledge of the applicant's teaching ability should be listed in the application. In the case of a beginning teacher, references should include those in the college placement folder. Experienced teachers should list at least three references including the most recent principal and other former school officials.

TRANSCRIPTS

The applicant should request the training institution (college/university) to forward a transcript to the personnel office. Both undergraduate and graduate transcripts are desired. Beginning teachers should file a supplemental transcript after requirements for the degree are met.

LICENSURE

The applicant is to assume responsibility in obtaining a North Carolina teacher's license and filing it with the personnel office upon being employed. Applicants still in teacher training should check with their college education department concerning licensure. Out-of-state applicants should write Division of Teacher Licensure, State Department of Public Instruction, Raleigh, North Carolina 27611, regarding their licensure to teach in the area of their application.

INTERVIEW

When vacancies occur, interviews are arranged with selected applicants holding proper licensure, provided all required data have been received. The interviewing process begins with the principal who is charted with the responsibility of interviewing at least three persons for each vacancy. After the principal has made his/her selection the applicant is interviewed by the personnel director, and finally the superintendent. The applicant, upon being recommended by all interviewers, is then placed under contract subject to the approval of the Board of Education. Applicants who are contracted prior to the school term are given a one year probationary contract. Persons contracted after the school term has begun are given a temporary contract which expires at the close of the school year or at the end of the period of time contracted.
