Off-Campus Programs

Assisting Children Together (ACT)

The ACT Program is a day treatment program serving children in kindergarten through middle school from all three school systems in Catawba County.  ACT is collaboratively operated by DSS/FamilyNet and the Newton-Conover City School System.  Funding is provided by the three school systems and DSS/FamilyNet.

The program serves up to 40 children using a structured, small group, therapeutic approach to teach new behavior skills in children and their families.  A team consisting of a teacher, a teacher assistant, and a clinician is assigned to work with a group of students, but an in-home family therapist and a psychiatrist is available when needed.  The program endeavors to return a student to his/her home school as quickly as possible after academic and behavioral goals are met.  When a student returns to the home school, ACT provides follow-up services for that child, the school, and the family for an extended time period.

Conover School

The Conover School is a public separate school for students with disabilities.  Most of the students in this setting are identified as being moderate/severe cognitive disabilities.  This school serves the three county school systems and is under the administrative control of Newton-Conover City Schools.  Approximately 120 students are enrolled ranging in age from 3 to 21.
