In addition to those special education services provided at each school in the Catawba County School System, cluster classes are available on some regular school campuses to serve the needs of low-incidence populations such as students with autism and students with severe behavioral/emotional needs. The location of our current cluster classes and their focus are as follows:
| Host Schools |
Serve the needs of... |
| Balls Creek, Lyle Creek, and Startown |
elementary students with autism or any communication disorders |
| Lyle Creek Elementary |
elementary students with serious emotional concerns (students need not be labeled Severe-Emotionally Disabled to be in this program) |
| Claremont |
students with significant hearing and language disabilities |
| Fred T. Foard, Jacobs Fork, River Bend, Bunker Hill, Catawba Rosenwald |
middle and high school students with autism and/or serious functional skills/life-skills deficits |
| Catawba, Clyde Campbell, Murray, Maiden Elem and Mountain View |
elementary students with serious cognitive, academic, and/or functional skills/life-skills deficits |
As mandated by law, each student is to be served in the least restrictive environment in a location as near to his/her home as possible. Cluster classes are only for those students whose needs dictate very specialized services with a reduced teacher/pupil ratio. Students who are appropriate for these classes are those for whom the regular services offered at the home school have not been successful in meeting his/her needs. When the school is considering placement in a cluster program, the school's program specialist should be involved as early in the process as possible. The program specialist will arrange a visit for the parent to the class being considered and will observe with the parent. Students being considered for cluster classes are staffed by the Exceptional Children leadership team. Prior to locating a student's services in a cluster class, it is important that appropriate resourses have been made available to the student in his/her home school.
Transportation is provided to students who are placed in cluster classes.
