3.  Musher Data Spreadsheet
Using one of the data spreadsheet templates in the Document Resources on the main page, students could enter data and manipulate it.  For example, sorting by age, state, etc. 

4.  Scavenger Hunt (Maiden Elementary)
On the documents page there is a Scavenger Hunt that can be used by your students.  Using http://www.iditarod.com & http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/iditarod.

5.  Google Earth     
Use Google Earth to track the Iditarod Race. You can even download the Iditarod.KMZ file (located in Document Resources) that has the trail already marked for you.   You have to have a computer with WindowsXP to do this and Goggle Earth loaded on the computer to use this file.  If you need help, please talk with your Tech. Facilitator.

6.  Iditarod Map            
Create your Iditarod map poster using Microsoft Publisher (Example 1: Iditarod Map prints out a 3' X 2' map and uses 16 sheets of paper.  Example 2:  Iditarod Map prints out   Example 2: Iditarod Map prints out 4' X 3' map and uses 25 sheets of paper), these are located in Document Resources.  After printing, the children can put the map together.  Laminating it will allow you to use it more than one time. 


7.  Totem Pole  (Claremont Elementary)
Using large coffee cans, students can create totem pole based upon the significant events and/or items of the Iditarod race. 

8.  After the Race Poster Contest (Claremont Elementary)

Using Jon Van Zyle's Iditarod Memories:  25 years of poster art from the last great race, classes will be challenged to design a poster representing the 2008 Iditarod Race.  A school winner will be selected.

9.  Red Lantern Celebration - Culminating Activity (Oxford Elementary)
Students make their own red lantern, fill out a certificate, celebrate the end of the race by eating snow cream cones (vanilla ice cream) and watch video coverage of the Iditarod race.   Download a copy of this activity in the Document Resources section of this webpage.

12.  Iditarod - GPS Activity (Claremont Elem)
(1)  Students will begin this activity by view Earth Science:  Mapping the Earth located on United Streaming Video.  This video contains information about GPS as well as map terminology.  
(2)  The students will use Google Earth students to complete a Iditarod Puzzler and learn more about latitude and longitude. 
(3)  The students will participate in an introductory Hide & Seek activity for to learn how to use the GPS device. 
(4)  The culminating activity consists of a GPS activity that includes searching for caches based upon the symbols from the Iditarod race.  The worksheets for these activities can be found in the Document Resources section of the webpage.

13.  Blubber Mitten Activity (Lyle Creek)
Student will experience animal adaptation through the use of bubbler mittens made from storage bags and Crisco. The lesson plan can be found in the Document Resources section of the webpage.

14.  Musher Commands (the language of the sled dogs) - teach the children the commands that the mushers use with their dogs.  You can find these on our Document Resources section of the webpage. 

15. Musher Probability - Find out which mushers have the highest probability of winning the race.
