Snow Creek 5th Graders Celebrate Environmental Awareness

Fifth grade students at Snow Creek Elementary attended the Environmental Awareness Field Day at South Newton Park.  Students rotated through a series of outdoor stations presented by local agencies.  The annual program is co-sponsored by the Catawba Soil and Water Conservation District and NC Cooperative Extension.

Presenters included:  Catawba Soil and Water Conservation District, Catawba County Recycling, Catawba County Cooperative Extension, North Carolina Forest Service, North Carolina State Parks, Riverbend Park Birds, and NC Air Quality.  Their goal is “to give local youth a better understanding of the agriculture, conservation, forestry, wildlife, and environment in our community.”

“The presenters were wonderful, they really did a great job in helping students to get The Big Picture,” said Heather Lyerly, a 5th grade teacher.  “With Snow Creek being North Carolina’s first “Green” school, we are trying to give the students here a better understanding of current environmental issues and the ways those issues impact our lives in Catawba County not just at school.

I think today’s events will have a huge impact on how our students will view environmental issues from now on,” she added.
