Announcements

  • As you know we have had several students absent in the past few weeks - in some cases between 10% to 15% at some of our schools.  We are aware that this is flu and strep season, and we wanted to inform you of the things we are doing to disinfect our schools.

    *  Our custodians and staff are disinfecting desks, knobs, restrooms, etc. each day and night.
    *  Schools that have experienced multiple days of a 10% absence rate or higher - the district will be sending additional personnel armed with spray equipment to spray and wipe down surfaces throughout the school.
    * All sprays used are hospital grade disinfectants to kill the germs each day and night.

Our schools have been encouraging extra hand washing for students and staff as our Blackboard Connect message indicated last week.  We also ask that as parents you remind your students to wash their hands several times a day and we ask that you do not send your children to school with a fever.  Children need to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

Thank you for helping to keep our schools clean and safe...

  • Flu season is peaking, so please help us prevent flu from spreading. If your child is sick, please keep them away from school until they are free from fever for 24 hours without fever reducing medication. Other ways to prevent the flu include washing your hands frequently, coughing into your sleeve, and getting a flu shot. If your child is experiencing flu-like symptoms, please contact your child’s doctor for possible evaluation.  If you have questions about when your child should return to school after an illness, please contact the school or the school nurse.

Thank you for helping keep our schools healthy!

Catawba News

From the Principal

  • Mr. Sigmon My name is J. R. Sigmon and I am so excited to be joining the Catawba Elementary family. Everyone has been so welcoming and I appreciate all of the encouraging words. I am a native of Catawba County. I was born and raised in the Vale community, where I attended Banoak Elementary, Blackburn Middle, and graduated from Fred T. Foard High School. I received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master’s degree is school administration from Appalachian State University. I began my teaching career at Banoak Elementary, where I taught 5th & 6th grades for 8 years. I then had the opportunity to become the assistant principal at Maiden Elementary in 2007, where I remained until accepting the principalship here at Catawba Elementary.

My wife, Olivia, and I live in the Newton area, with our dog, Jazzy. We love to travel, our favorite place to visit is always the beach. I also enjoy watching Tarheel basketball and Panthers football. I am anxious to meet each and every one of the students at Catawba Elementary and begin developing relationships with the families in the community. I am very proud to be a part of the Catawba community and look forward to continuing the tradition of success.
